“The Last Canticle of St. Francis”

A dramatic monologue in two acts
Sunday October 7th at 4 PM

On Sunday, October 7th, at 4 pm, Charles D. Baker will perform “The Last Canticle of St. Francis”, a dramatic monologue in two acts, by John DeMers, in the Sanctuary of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church.

— St. Francis of Assisi ———-
Francis, the son of a prosperous merchant, was born in 1182.  His early youth was spent in harmless revelry and fruitless attempts to win military glory. Various encounters with beggars and lepers pricked the young man’s conscience, and he decided to embrace a life devoted to Lady Poverty.  Eventually Francis totally renounced all material possessions and devoted himself to serve the poor. He founded the Order of Friars Minor (Franciscans). His last years were spent in much suffering of body and spirit, but his unconquerable joy never failed. Francis left few writings; but of these, his spirit of joyous faith comes through most truly in the “Canticle of the Sun” which he composed at Clare’s convent of St. Damian’s.

— Charles D. Baker ———-
Charles Baker is a graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City and in 1989 began to perform the lives of great men in Christian History. He has performed in Damien, the Leper Priest of Molokai, I Paul, the life of St. Paul and “Baptizer”, the life of John the Baptist.

— Reception ———-
Immediately following the dramatic presentation there will be a reception in the Flora Linda Pavilion.
