The Pilgrimage begins in Tiberius

Our Footprints of God pilgrimage group arrived in Tiberias late Monday afternoon and we began our pilgrimage together with mass at St. Peter’s (Roman Catholic) Church. I was surprised that our Israeli guide was Roman Catholic (rather than Melkite Catholic or Greek Orthodox) and that there was a Roman Catholic Church in this small city. I discovered that the Crusader era, including the Crusader Kingdoms, created a Latin Catholic presence that has continued to this day. Over the centuries Christian Churches of various denominations have had greater or lesser freedom. The reason why there is a Roman Catholic parish in Tiberius is because they weren’t permitted in nearby Capernaum. (For more information you can visit St. Peter’s website.)

Amer Shehadeh, our Israeli guide, is excellent at providing historical and social context. Steve Ray, our American leader, unpacks the scripture at each site and invites us to go deeper in our faith and Christian living.

Our days are full, leaving little time in the evenings. I will try to tell you a little more about our daily experiences but much of it will have to wait until I get back. My heart and mind will be overflowing with things to share with you, starting on Tuesday, October 18.

In the meantime, Steve posts a 15 minute video each day summarizing our experiences. (Here is our first day.) Have a look if you like, and comment if you like. (Steve reads the comments to the group.)

Dianne and I pray for you all at each of the holy sites we visit. I particularly remembered you all at the site where Jesus restored Peter by asking him three times, “Do you love me?” I pray that we may all say with Peter, “Yes, Lord. You know that I love you.) (John 21:17)
